As a resident of St. Joseph, I’m wondering if there has been any recent laws passed that stop signs are options?
I go out walking anytime from 6-10 a.m. Sunday mornings to relax and get a good start on the day. However, I get extremely unsettled by the amount of drivers that don’t acknowledge a stop sign and not only roll through, but keep going as if there wasn’t a sign there. I’m walking sometimes at dawn, have a headlight so I’m visible and often there have been near misses between myself and a vehicle at a stop sign.
This morning I saw a car take a right turn going at least 35 mph at the corner of Seventh Avenue SE and Field Street. I was about to cross from the only sidewalk there heading west toward St. Ben’s area.
Then, in the recent past I was at the four-way stop on Seventh Avenue SE and Baker Street by the assisted living facility, I was on the right headed west beginning to accelerate when a car going north had to slam on his brakes to let me go through. I obviously had the right of way.
Next time I’m out walking I’m going to write down my observations in detail and send them to you.
I live on 12th Avenue SE and not to mention the people driving 45 mph down the road. How about putting a speed-limit sign on that street? Of course people wouldn’t take heed to the sign, but why not?
I moved to St. Joseph thinking this would be a safer place to live. I feel safe in other aspects, but as law enforcement it’s the job of ensuring safety to the citizens whom pay their salary.
If there has been a law passed that stop signs are optional, please let me know so in the event I get pulled over for disregarding one I can reference that ordinance.
