The Sartell City Council accepted a low bid for Phase I of Pinecone Road improvements at its last council meeting, May 26.
The bid of $2,918,725 was submitted by J.R. Ferche Inc. of Rice. It was one of a half dozen bids submitted.
The city engineer had allowed companies in the bidding process to submit alternate bids for a longer work schedule, thinking that might save the city some money. But the alternate bids were still higher than Ferche’s low bid.
Ferche is committed to finishing the project by Aug. 28.
Council members voted 4-1 for the Ferche proposal. Amy Braig-Lindstrom voted against it because she has long maintained the project is not needed yet.
Phase I of Pinecone Park improvements will involve installing a roundabout at the intersection of Pinecone and 2nd Street S., reconstructing Pinecone with concrete surface from that intersection north to 500 feet south of 7th Street N., resurfacing the bike-hike trail on that stretch and adding a right-turn lane into the Bernick’s Arena area.
The city engineer has worked out solutions to try to minimize disruptions to businesses in that area during the course of the road work.

The intersection of Pinecone Road and 2nd Street S. in Sartell will eventually become a roundabout as part of Pinecone Road improvements. The project will start soon and is expected to be completed by Aug. 15.
