Marit Ortega will become the new executive director of the Tri-County Humane Society when its current director, Vicki Davis, retires in February 2024.
Davis has been with the humane society for 40 years.
Ortega has demonstrated a long-time, passionate commitment to the St. Cloud-based nonprofit humane society and the animals in its care.
From 2002 to 2018, Ortega served in a variety of roles at the pet shelter and since 2018 she has been a part-time volunteer at the shelter. She has also been very active in the Catholic Community Schools organization. She has served as its development director and leading the Campaign for Cathedral (high school). She helped raise more than $5 million for that effort.
“I am honored to be named the executive director of Tri-County Humane Society,” Ortega said. “I’m excited to continue serving the greater St. Cloud area with the same dedication to companion animal welfare and love of the human-animal bond that has brought so many pets and people together during Vicki’s years of service.”
Vicki Davis expressed strong support for Ortega as the new director.
“Marit has a history with the Tri-County Humane Society and a heart for animal welfare,” she said. “Knowing she’s going to be in my office makes leaving a little easier.”
The humane society opened in 1974. Since that time it has placed thousands upon thousands of animals, mainly cats and dogs, in adoptive homes throughout central Minnesota. It has also done extensive educational outreach in schools and elsewhere concerning animals, their well-being and their needs. The society depends upon donations and people willing to volunteer in a variety of capacities.
