St. Joseph will soon have a new mayor, Adam Scepaniak, one new city-council member, Adam Schnettler, as well as a re-elected incumbent council member, Kelly Beniek.
Those three were elected in the Nov. 5 general election. Scepaniak, a current city-council member, defeated two other contenders for the mayoral position – Jon Hazen and Robert Loso. Scepaniak will lead the city after the long-time service of Mayor Rick Schultz, who had decided not to file for re-election after serving in that position for 14 years.
Vote totals: Scepaniak 1,415; Hazen, 1,196; Loso 561.
Scepaniak
Before the election, Scepaniak told the Newsleaders he believes his “experiences as a businessman and city official will dovetail to help create a dynamic city, building on its current strengths and on its future potential.”
A six-year resident of St. Joseph, Mayor-elect Scepaniak currently serves, until January, as a city-council member. He is also a member of the city’s planning commission and a St. Joseph firefighter. Scepaniak is managing editor of AllOutdoor.com and a freelance writer for Hunting/Outdoors with its more than 10 print and online publications. He is also the manager of the Guns and Gear store in Waite Park.

Ballot Question 1: On the Nov. 5 Stearns County ballots was a question on whether the county should initiate a county-wide sales tax of an additional .375 percent to help pay for a new County Justice Center. The question was approved by voters by a hefty margin of 62.5 percent yes to 37.75 percent (50,234 yes votes, 30,466 no votes).
Ballot Question 2: The question for voter was this: “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to protect drinking water sources and the water quality of lakes, rivers and streams; conserve wildlife habitat and natural areas; improve air quality; and expand access to parks and trails by extending the transfer of proceeds from the state-operated lottery to the environment and natural resources trust fund, and to dedicate the proceeds for these purposes?”
