The Sartell High School Student Council was recently honored with a 2024 National Gold Council of Excellence Award from the National Association of Student Councils.
It is the eighth or ninth time the student council has won that top national award, according to its advisor.
The council was recognized for its leadership, services and activities that improve both the school and the people who live in Sartell.
“I am so proud of our student council for their hard work, innovative programming and leadership,” said Karrie Fredrickson, student-council advisor.
Students at Sartell High School have continued traditions such as Thanksgiving in a Box (a local food drive for local families), Adopt-A-Highway (volunteering during the year to keep a two-mile stretch of road free from litter) and Funfest (an annual event to encourage people to contribute funds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation).
“They (council members) have also introduced what I believe will be traditions for future Sabres including a Senior Sunrise breakfast before the first day of school,” Fredrickson added.
NASC’s parent organization is the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
NASSP’s Chief Executive Officer Ronn Nozoe praised the Sartell Student Council for winning the award.
“Sartell High School has gone above and beyond in elevating student voices to ensure they are establishing a positive climate and culture, as well as fostering academic and social growth for all,” Nozoe said.
A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Gold Council of Excellence Award. Those criteria include basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process; successful sponsorship; and participation in activities like leadership development and service to the school and to the people in the city.
