This election isn’t about a political party, it’s about democracy

Ronald Douglas

Vietnam veteran

Sartell

Patriotism isn’t about waving a flag or wearing a hat. It’s about more than that. When our nation calls us to war; it’s the ultimate ask. Those who respond to the call know they may be giving their life, their dreams, their every imaginable desire, for this one act of loyalty.

Several of my friends served. A few never came home. I think of them every day. It breaks my heart to see the political sign some veterans show on their hats and yard signs that speak of a person who degraded veterans, called them suckers and losers. A person who refused to honor the 1,800 Marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood, in WWI. Instead, he stayed in his hotel room, afraid rain would bleed the coloring out of his hair. No thought of bloodshed.

What troubles me most: those who served in war yet support this convicted felon. Why?

He doesn’t believe in democracy, he told us he wants to be a dictator. His political handbook tells us how he will privatize the Veterans Administration. The benefits wounded veterans now receive he wants to periodically review so he can reduce or eliminate. This fact was attested to by his administrator of the VA.

The guy disparages all veterans. A few days ago, he compared a civilian award given to his political donor with the Medal of Honor. He said his political donor’s medal is even more important than the Medal of Honor. He has no respect for any veteran.

John McCain, a prisoner of war, spent years in a POW prison in Vietnam. He called McCain a loser. How can any veteran support him? He wrapped himself in the flag and kissed it as if it was another woman he just disgraced. He disgraces both.

The Marine General and Chief of Staff John Kelly referred to his former boss as “the most flawed person he’s ever known, and the depths of his dishonesties is astounding.” His vice president won’t even support him, nor will most of his cabinet. Many of those who worked for him are his most vocal opponents. They won’t support him. The man has been convicted of a sexual crime, charged and found guilty of 34 felonies, multiple bankruptcies and innumerable civil cases. His criminal offenses are difficult to keep count of. His lies are unending. He has no respect for anyone.

Maybe it’s the propaganda some got sucked into. Maybe they think he’s a conservative. He isn’t. He doesn’t even believe in democracy. This election isn’t about a political party, it’s about democracy.
